How does this site work?
The Bahá’í Faith in England site is powered by a blog publishing system called WordPress.
What is a blog?
As described in short on Wikipedia, A blog is a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.
How does this apply to the Council for England?
It means that this site will be used as a focal point for news, stories and other updates regarding the Bahá’í Faith in England, which will be posted up on a regular basis, as described, in a journal-type manner.
How is this site organized?
As you can see it is comprised of three columns and a header/banner.
THE HEADER
What’s in the header?
The header always contains a link back to the homepage. So if you ever get lost navigating around the site, you can always get back to the homepage by clicking on the large text that reads The Bahá’í Faith in England.
There is also a search facility. Using the field in the header area next to the eagle you can enter search terms to find information on the site related to any given subject. This will return results from all aspects of the site content, whether it is posts, pages or comments.
THE LEFT HAND COLUMN
What’s in the left hand column?
The left hand column contains links relating directly to the blog aspect of the site i.e. the news/stories/updates posted into the central column. These links are explained in more detail below.
What is the Calendar of Events?
The calendar of events is very much what it it says on the tin. There is at least one event on every date that you see highlighted in blue. If you hover over such dates with the mouse you will see a summary of the event(s). Click on the date for more details. The event information will be displayed much like any oher entry on the site. Alternatively you can click on the month name to see the list of events for the entire month in blog style.
What are categories?
Every entry made on the blog can be associated with one or more categories. This is designed to make it possible for the user to filter for only those entries relating to a particular topic. For example, by clicking on the Children’s Classes category, only stories containing content regarding Children’s Classes will be displayed. The number in parentheses next to each category name indicates the current number of entries within that category. Should you click on a category with no entries you will see a standard error message displayed.
What are archives?
As more and more updates are made to the blog, older entries will no longer be visible on the front page. You can then continue to access these previous articles by clicking on the links to previous months provided in the archives section.
THE RIGHT HAND COLUMN
What’s in the right hand column?
The right hand column contains two kinds of links.
Some of them lead to completely separate websites that include content pertinent to the Bahá’í Faith in England and in a wider context e.g. The Bahá’í Faith.
Other links will lead to pages within this site. Pages are different to journal entries in that they are not attached to a particular date and tend to contain static content i.e. information that doesn’t change a great deal. What you are reading now, for example, is a page.
THE CENTRAL COLUMN
What’s in the central column?
Primarily the most recent news/posts/entries. Below the entries you will also find link to the categories (the same type of thing as contained in the left hand column) into which the entry has been placed. These will appear after the words “Posted in”.
You will also see a link “No Comment” or some number of comments. Comments are the feedback provided by various visitors to the site. You can click on this link to both read previous comments and leave a comment of your own. Once you’ve submitted your comment an email will be sent to the site administrator to notify them. Subject to the administrator’s moderation you comment will be approved and appear under that post for other visitors to read.
The central column will also show pages, just like this one, when you select a relevant link from the right hand column.
